First update on AICP Certification Maintenance Program

This blog is designed to update the hundreds of planners who are concerned about the governance and structure of the American Institute of Certified Planners Certification Maintenance program.

At its semi-annual meeting on April 26, the AICP Commission considered, but did not take action on, a proposal to change the fee structure for the CM program. The proposed structure, which would cap costs to continuing education providers at $2,000 to $5,000, is a better structure than the current one. (It's better, but still not good enough, for reasons we'll discuss later)

Commissioners said they hope to come to a decision in a few weeks, after getting more input from APA chapters.

Not that I'm advocating mutiny, but a recent call to the NJ State Board of Planners confirmed that licensed Professional Planners in New Jersey do not need to maintain their AICP certification to retain their PP. I paid my AICP dues this year because the odds of fixing this from the outside are nil. If the PP is enough credential for you, a self-imposed suspension of 2 or 3 years from enough AICP members would send a very loud message.

Did anyone else think it was strange that there was only one ethics session at Vegas? At least APA is consistent. Paul Farmer is the sole arbiter of ethics and the bottleneck for all ethics issues. It is a pity they can't develop coursework that others can teach or guidance that doesn't require Paul's subjective interpretation. God help us if he retires.

On the positive side, AICP has hired additional staff to manage the program. Hopefully that will help the group be more responsive. I wish them well in a very difficult job.
